This page is dedicated to complete history of Leeds United captains in competitive matches across the club's history. These records are only a collection of every Leeds player who started a match as Leeds captain, so any players who were given the armband during a match or after coming on as a substitute are not included.

Jim Baker became the first ever club captain of Leeds United between 1920 and 1925 and led the club to the 1923/24 Second Division Championship.

Billy Bremner remains Leeds United's greatest captain between 1959 and 1976 and holds the club record for the most competitive starts as Leeds United captain with 488. He is the only solitary Leeds player to have captained the club more than 300 times. Leeds' most successful club captain of all-time also holds the club record for the most wins across all competitions by any single player (406).

The Scottish relationship between Leeds United and club captains is one of the strongest in English football. Five of the 10 Leeds players to have started the most matches as captain are Scottish.

Trevor Cherry holds the record for the most matches started as captain for Leeds United by an English player (222).

Lucas Radebe hold the record for the most starts as Leeds United captain by a non-British player. The legendary South African centre-back accumulated 124 starts as captain between 1994 and 2005.

John Charles holds the record for the most starts as Leeds captain by a Welsh player (120) between 1949 and 1957 and upon his return to the club in 1962.

Liam Cooper is one of just five captains in the club’s history to lead title-winning teams, lifting the Championship title in 2019/20 under Marcelo Bielsa. Cooper assumed the role of club captain in 2017 and was given the honour of captaining the club by 11 different managers and head coaches until 2024.

Ethan Ampadu is the current Leeds United club captain after having been appointed by manager Daniel Farke in August 2024.

“No manager could wish for a greater leader or a greater player. If I was in the trenches at the front line, the man I would want on my right side is Billy Bremner.”

Don Revie
