Leeds Substitute Goals

This is a record of goals scored by Leeds United substitutes across the club's entire history. Substitutes were first introduced into English league football by the Football Association at the start of the 1965/66 season.

Terry Hibbitt became the first Leeds United player to score a goal as a substitute in a 4-0 win against Nottingham Forest at the City Ground on February 19th 1966 in Division One. Peter Lorimer became the first Leeds United substitute to score in additional time when he netted a 91st minute goal in a 2-0 win at Nottingham Forest on February 25th 1969.

Luciano Becchio holds the club record for the most goals scored by a Leeds United substitute with 11 goals between 2008 and 2012. Patrick Bamford is next with eight substitute goals for the club and is the record English substitute goalscorer for the club. Davide Somma holds the club record for the most substitute goals in a single season when he scored 6 over the course of the 2010/11 campaign. Keith Edwards (1987) and Joël Piroe (2024) remain the only Leeds players to score five goals as a substitute in a single calendar year. 

Phil Masinga and Luciano Becchio remain the only Leeds players to have scored hat-tricks as substitutes. Phil Masinga scored three goals against Walsall in a 5-2 FA Cup win on January 17th 1995. Luciano Becchio scored three second half goals in a 3-1 victory over Bristol City at Elland Road in the Championship. Becchio holds the honour of being the only Leeds United player to have scored a league hat-trick as a substitute.

James Milner holds the record for the youngest ever Leeds United substitute goalscorer when he got his name on the scoresheet in a 2-1 Boxing Day win at Sunderland in the Premier League aged 16 years, 356 days on December 26th 2002. Pablo Hernandez's famous 89th-minute winner at Swansea City in the Championship on July 12th 2020 made him the oldest Leeds substitute to score for the club aged 35 years, 92 days.

19-year-old Terry Connor scored the earliest goal by a Leeds substitute in any single game netting after 20 minutes in a 4-3 defeat at West Ham on April 24th 1982. Terry Connor also scored the latest goal Leeds have ever scored by a substitute when he scored in the 120th minute deep into extra-time in a 4-3 League Cup win at Newcastle United on October 27th 1982.

Leon Constantine holds the all-time Leeds United club record for the fastest ever goal scored by a substitute when he registered after just 15 seconds after coming on at the start of second half as a substitute in a 1-3 League One home defeat to Oldham Athletic at Elland Road on January 1st 2008. ​Mateo Joseph scored 25 seconds after coming on as a substitute in the 83rd minute of a 2-2 Championship draw with Watford at Vicarage Road on March 29th 2024. Rasmus Kristensen scored 26 seconds after coming on as a substitute in the 61st minute of a 4-2 Premier League win against Wolves at Molineux on March 18th 2023. Other notable recent fast goals have been scored by Joe Gelhardt 90 seconds after coming on as a substitute in the 92nd minute of a 2-1 Premier League win over Norwich City at Elland Road on March 13th 2022. Davide Somma also scored 92 seconds after coming on as a substitute in the 73rd minute of a 2-2 Championship draw with Norwich City at Elland Road on February 19th 2011.

Tresor Kandol holds the record of being the only Leeds player to score as a substitute and receive a red card in a single game in a 4-0 win over Yeovil Town at Elland Road on October 31st 2009, scoring three minutes after being brought on after 81 minutes before being sent off after the full-time whistle.

​Joël Piroe scored six goals as a substitute for Leeds United in 2024, the highest ever tally by a single player in a single year for the club. Piroe also became the youngest player in the club's history to score six substitute goals for Leeds (25 years, 99 days) after scoring in 2-0 home win against QPR on November 9th 2024.

Leeds scored 39 goals from substitutes under Simon Grayson between 2008 and 2012, more than any other single manager or head coach in the club's history.
